Copper Care

“I never polished my own pieces back to bright. I liked watching them age. A patina means the copper has been somewhere. It means it was real.”

— Grace, Grace’s Copper

Pure copper is a living metal. It responds to your skin, your environment, and your daily life. That’s not a flaw — that’s the point. This guide will help you clean, maintain and understand your copper piece so you can wear it the way it was always meant to be worn: every single day.

Three Methods. All Natural. All from Your Kitchen.

1
Lemon & Salt
Fastest method

The fastest method for a quick refresh. Citric acid dissolves tarnish almost instantly without any scrubbing.

  1. Cut a lemon in half
  2. Dip the cut side lightly in table salt
  3. Rub directly on the copper for 30–60 seconds
  4. Rinse thoroughly with warm water
  5. Dry immediately with a soft cloth
Best for: Light tarnish and everyday maintenance. The copper will brighten within seconds.
2
Vinegar & Salt Soak
Heavier tarnish

Better for heavier tarnish. The acidity does the work — no scrubbing needed. Let the solution do it for you.

  1. Mix white vinegar with a teaspoon of salt in a small bowl
  2. Submerge the copper piece fully
  3. Soak for 15–30 minutes depending on tarnish level
  4. Remove and rinse thoroughly under warm water
  5. Dry immediately and completely
Best for: Pieces left unworn for a long time or with heavy oxidation. Do not exceed 30 minutes.
3
Baking Soda Paste
Gentlest option

The gentlest option. Good for detailed or engraved pieces where you need precision without harsh abrasion.

  1. Mix baking soda with just enough water to form a thick paste
  2. Apply with a soft cloth or an old soft-bristle toothbrush
  3. Work gently into any grooves or hammered texture
  4. Rinse thoroughly under warm running water
  5. Dry immediately — do not leave water sitting on the copper
Best for: Engraved or detailed pieces. The mildest abrasive action, safe for daily use.

Understanding Your Patina

Over time, your copper piece will develop a patina — a natural darkening that comes from contact with air, moisture and your skin. This is not damage. This is copper doing exactly what copper does.

The natural oils from your skin gently polish the metal every day you wear it. The more you wear it, the more beautifully it ages. Pieces worn daily develop a rich, deep amber-brown tone that is unique to your body chemistry — no two pieces ever look exactly the same.

You can clean it back to bright whenever you like using the methods above. Or you can leave it. A patina means the copper has been somewhere. It means it was real.

Daily Care Tips

Wear it daily

The more contact with your skin the better. Daily wear is the best thing you can do for your copper piece.

Shower with it on

Pure copper handles water well. Rinse with fresh water after swimming in chlorinated pools or the sea.

Sleep in it

Many of our customers never take their copper off. Safe and comfortable to sleep in every night.

Keep it dry after cleaning

Always dry your piece immediately after any cleaning method. Moisture left sitting accelerates patina.

Do’s & Don’ts

✓ Do
  • Wear it every day — skin contact is beneficial
  • Clean with natural kitchen ingredients only
  • Rinse thoroughly after cleaning
  • Dry immediately and completely
  • Wear in the shower and while sleeping
  • Let the patina develop naturally
  • Polish back to bright whenever you prefer
✗ Don’t
  • Use commercial metal polishes or chemicals
  • Leave moisture sitting on the surface after cleaning
  • Store in an airtight bag with other metals
  • Use abrasive scrubbing pads or steel wool
  • Soak for more than 30 minutes in any solution
  • Apply perfume or lotion directly on the piece
  • Worry about normal colour changes — that is just copper

Storing Your Copper

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight when not wearing. A small cloth pouch or jewellery box with soft lining is ideal.

Avoid storing copper with silver or gold — different metals can cause unwanted reactions over time.

The best storage for copper is on your wrist. A piece worn every day will always look better than one kept in a drawer.
